The Story Behind the Brim

California, 1988

The idea for Scala began in California with a simple conviction: American sun deserved Italian craftsmanship. We crafted our first hats around the designer traditions of Italian millinery with clean lines, honest materials, a fit that lasts a lifetime.

Three Materials, a Whole Year

Panama for travel that's light, packable, and sun-ready. Raffia for the warm everyday poolside, garden, coast. Crushable felt for cooler months that's structured, durable, and made to layer. Most brands give you a season. We give you the rest of the year.

A Hat Should Earn Its Place

Scala has handcrafted designer hats for many decades. Not accessories you forget in a closet, but hats you reach for, pack first, and wear until they feel like yours.

We Sweat the Weave

A Scala Panama hat takes days to weave. Toquilla palm, split fine and worked by hand by a small group of Ecuadorian artisans keeps a centuries old craft alive. The grade 8 quality can have more than 2,000 weaves per square inch.
